If you don't get that reference, I'm guessing you weren't around for the Fanlib disaster... ( Very quick run-down )
Which is my roundabout way of saying, that I'd totally love an invite to Archive of our Own, if there are spares. :) I've got two promised to me now, so don't worry.

It's daytime! And I'm (sorta) awake. And I wanted to remind folks of three comms I run which could use a little love.
The first is
thebigstore, a multi-fandom comm dedicated to our inappropriate love of conmen, grifters, and thieves. We plan on stealing a ficathon in January. Also, the community encourages posting of helpful research links for writers, as well as recs.
The second is
gosfordpark a wee tiny comm for fans of the film Gosford Park. Since Gosford fandom usually perks up at
yuletide, reminding folk of its existence seems timely. The masterlist probably needs updating, but it's your one-stop-shopping for Gosford fanfic.
Lastly, you may have noticed I pretty much live at
pike_numberone. It's my happy place. But being my happy place, sometimes I am the only person posting there. This makes me sad. Please share your fic, discussion, icons, recs, fanart, etc. for Pike and Number One in all their incarnations! TOS, AOS, novels, comics, you name it, we're interested. Especially as the DVD of Star Trek (2009) comes out on Tuesday, I except a lot of folks who haven't seen the film might be wandering around, wondering where all the awesome Bruce Greenwood love is found. Okay, technically, it's found at
pike_2009. BUT there's ♥ at
pike_numberone too!

Work continues resonably well, actually. I spent Friday getting to write, which I actually sort of adored doing; I researched stuff, I read what the original person had used on a previous copy of the website, I did some more research, I wrote something. It's not fanfiction, it's not NaNo, and it's certainly in no way creatively or indeed rigorously academic, but I really enjoyed myself. Plus I am now an expert on turf diseases. Come to me with your lawn-based problems and I will tell you that the solution is basically to mow more often!
Some of that might be a result of a week of cold-calling builder's merchants, but... yes. Good fun. I always did enjoy researching. Perhaps my career plan of being a QI Elf isn't that far off after all.
However, that's not to say I'm not grateful for a weekend. I went out last night with
neypygill and had a really good time; we gossiped about life, and fandom, and cocktails. Which, really, is the best sort of night out.
Not really sure what else to say, now. I'm spending my weekend in a fairly sedate way, mostly based around television. I'm going to spend the afternoon catching up on The Sarah-Jane Adventures and Beautiful People, although the latter will make me horribly nostalgic for sitting in my living room in St Andrews with
stupidore on a Thursday night. Obviously tonight is Merlin night - YAY - but really it's overshadowed by the awesomeness of TV tomorrow. New Who! New Top Gear! New Garrow's Law on the iPlayer to watch! I AM SO EXCITED LIKE YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE.
(And if that doesn't tell you that I am a well-rounded individual with a range of interests then I don't know what will.)
At some point I need to do my washing, and some cooking so I have something more appealing to eat at lunch than Cup-A-Soup. Ah, the joys of 9-5.

Guess what I got in the mail today?
The Chinatown Death Cloud Peril! Mine, to keep! Paperbackswap is the best thing of today.
I am terribly excited about rereading it, though of course that will cause slight problems. See, I can acquire Doc Savage novels. And I have Lovecraft. And hell, I could get the pulp stories of L Ron Hubbard if I really wanted to - I've seen them at B&N. So why the hell is it so hard to get my hands on Walter Gibson Shadow novels?
(Yes, yes, radio, I know. The radio show is good - I like it. It has Orson Welles. I still want to read the books and am not currently able to.)
Ah, well. It is a somewhat silly complaint. I have a book, it is an enjoyable book, that is the thing that matters.

I was lucky enough to score a signed copy of Leviathan at BEA back in May. Bill immediately seized it so that he and his son (8) could read it together, but I've finally got it back and my daughter (7) and I are really enjoying it. (Yes, we know our kids aren't technically young adults yet, but the book is that good.)

MAH ICONS.
HOW MANY ICONS DO YOU HAVE: Currently uploaded: 194
OUT OF HOW MANY AVAILABLE ICONS SPACES: out of 200.
IF YOU COULD BUY SPACE FOR MORE, WOULD YOU: Yes
DO YOUR ICONS MAKE A STATEMENT: Well, they are a shortcut visual guide to me and my fandoms, in a lot of ways. One glance at my icons gives you an almost exact reverse-date order look at my fannish joys and loves from the last 10 years.
WHAT FANDOM DO YOU HAVE THE MOST ICONS OF: Star Trek (TOS/AOS) (51)
AND THE SECOND MOST: The Middleman (15)
WHAT SHIP DO YOU HAVE THE MOST ICONS OF: Pike/Number One
DO YOU MAKE YOUR OWN ICONS: Yep.
ARE THEY SHAREABLE?: With one or two exceptions, no. An LJ icon is meant to represent you, and be a quick way to identify a poster at at glance. So don't really like to share them out. Tho I do make custom icons all the time for people, based on mine. And some of these were originally in up for grabs icon posts. But the majority I made for me and/or my close friends, and don't share.
